His Father Jose Ruiz Blasco was a professor in the school of arts and crafts. His Mother's name is Maria Ruiz Picasso. Pablo signed his work with the name Ruiz but in 1901 started using his Mother's name Picasso instead. He had two wiser named Lola and Concepcion, but he was the eldest. Supposedly Picasso learned to draw before he could speak. His father would take him to see bullfights as a child and one of his earlier paintings is of a bullfight. When Picasso turned fourteen his family moved to La Coruna, this is where he began attending the School of Fine Art. He went to school and really impressed his teachers but grew bored and began studying on his own. He moved to Paris in 1904 which at that the was one of the most art cultured places in the world. During his time in Paris he focused on Modern art and his style changed rapidly. He developed his own creativity that shines through in most of his work.
From 1901- 1904 he had a period known as The Blue Period. These pieces are all in somber blue type colors. This created a malancoly mood when looking at them. The cool colors were all Pablo used for that entire period of time. The last two pictures on the top of the page are from his blue period. In other words this time period is like a somber poetry type set the really promotes feeling. Abstract art was not yet a style at this time period. Picasso grew tired and dissatisfied with traditional art. The color changes show him starting to experiment and begin working into the abstract type artwork. At this time Pablo was in his twenties. Carlos Casagemas was a friend of Pablo's. He committed suicide because the woman that he loved refused him. This devastated and cause a lot of trauma for Picasso which really was the reason the blue period happened. His next period was his rose period, 1904-1906. This was basically because he became happier. He met a woman and fell in love with her. At one point he ever proposed to her; she rejected him because she was already married. She was his mistress for nine years.
Picasso became more and more abstract in his work and eventually developed cubism. Cubism is when you can see the profile and side of the subject at the same time. This growth and new idea is shown in his work from 1907-1911. After 1911 Picasso and another artist began experimenting with words. They cut parts of newspapers out and collaged them. His most famous one is called Still Life With Chair Caning. He also worked with sculpting and prints throughout his entire career.
One of his most famous pieces is called Guernica. It is a scene from aSpanish battle. An interesting thing about Picasso is he was openly communist. When he was asked about his belief he stated, "When I was a boy in Spain, I was very poor and aware of how poor people had to live. I learned that Communists were for the poor people. That was enough to know. So i became for the Communists." He created a painting of Joseph Stalin but it was so controversial they band it in the Soviet Union and banned all of his work.
Picasso was married twice and had four children. He was working on a museum with 200 of his pieces before he died in his 35 roomed house. He was in exile from Spain but gave 3 to 4 hundred art pieces to them. The leader at the time (Franco) disliked Picasso so he didn't include his name anywhere.
